Ladislav (Laco) Novomeský (born December 27, 1904 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † September 4, 1976 in Bratislava , Czechoslovakia ) was a Slovak communist politician, poet and publicist.
Life
Novomeský was born as the son of a tailor who had immigrated from Senica in Budapest and attended an elementary school there from 1910–1915 and a grammar school from 1915–1919. In 1925 Novomeský became a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) and gave up his profession as a teacher. Since 1925 he was the author and editor of various left-wing newspapers, such as Haló noviny , Ľudový denník , Pravda chudoby , Rudé právo , Tvorba and others.
After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1939, he moved to Slovakia, where he joined the communist resistance against the regime of the Slovak state and was one of the leading figures in the Slovak national uprising .
After the restoration of Czechoslovakia in 1945, he held positions such as vice-chairman of the Slovak National Council, commissioner for education and folk culture and was also chairman of Matica slovenská . In 1950, however, he was dismissed from all positions, imprisoned in 1951 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1954 in the constructed trial against bourgeois nationalists and was held in Leopoldov Prison , among other places . However, in 1955 he was released from prison and worked at the National Literature Memorial in Prague before being fully rehabilitated by KSČ in 1963 and then becoming head of the Institute of Slovak Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences , where he stayed until 1970. After the invasion of the Warsaw Pact against the Prague Spring in August 1968, he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia and again chairman of Matica slovenská .
