Ladislav Prokeš (born June 8, 1884 in Prague ; † January 9, 1966 there ) was a Czech chess player and study composer .

Chess composition

Prokeš began composing in 1906 and is said to have published over 1200 studies. 23 of his compositions can be found in the FIDE albums . His works are shaped by the influence of the Bohemian School and emphasize the strict economy of resources, many of them in miniature form. Often his compositions consisted of the main idea, so the solution was usually short.

From 1909 to 1927 Prokeš was the editor of the column for chess composition in Československý Šach . The Prokeš maneuver was named after him.

White to move wins

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

Solution:

1. b7 Nd6 +
2. Kd4! (not 2. Kd5? Nxb7 3. e7 Kf7 draw ) Nxb7
3. Kd5 Kg7 3.… Nc5 also loses: 4. e7 Sa6 (prevents the conversion into a heavy piece with the knight fork on c7 ) 5. Kd6 Kf7 6. Nd8 + Ke8 7. Ne6 (threatens Ng7 +) Kf7 8. Ng7 Nc7 9. Kd7 Zugzwang Kf6 10. Ne8 + and this new knight fork decides.
4. Nd8! Nxd8
5. e7 ( echo on key move ) wins, because now the conversion can no longer be prevented. Although the king gets into the pawn's square, the square rule does not apply in this case, because the pawn can move diagonally away from the king by moving.
