State of the Union episode 80 (video)

State of the Nation is a German-language podcast about current affairs, moderated by Philip Banse and Ulf Buermeyer . A new edition has been published every week since March 13, 2016.

concept

The podcast consists of a dialogue between the journalist Phillip Banse and the judge and civil rights activist Ulf Buermeyer. Buermeyer was a member of the SPD until 2019 , then ended his membership, among other things, with reference to the fact that membership in a political party would not be conducive to his journalistic work. The conversation, in which they deal with the political events of the past week, is characterized by a frequently recurring structure: the topics are regularly examined first with regard to the currently available facts on the basis of primary sources and newspaper articles and then commented personally by the moderators. In each episode, the moderators also deal with the feedback from the listeners. The length of an episode varies between sixty and ninety minutes and depends on the topic and the free time of the moderators.

Lea Börgerding joined the duo as a foreign policy expert in autumn 2017. Occasionally Banse and Buermeyer conduct interviews with experts.

production

The format can be accessed free of charge and is financed through advertising and donations. However, there are also a küchenstud.io / + -called subscription offer , which allows access to a live stream of the recording and additional content promises. In October 2017, each episode of the podcast was downloaded 70,000 to 80,000 times, some episodes up to 90,000 times. Donations of 2,000 to 2,500 euros were received every month. At the end of 2017 there were just under 500 paying subscribers. In November 2019, the podcasters said that in the first four weeks, each episode would be downloaded around 150,000 times and streamed around 80,000 to 90,000 times on Spotify.

New episodes appear weekly at an unspecified time on the weekend. The recording usually takes place on Fridays and is offered as a live stream for subscribers . Occasionally, the podcast is produced live in front of an audience as a so-called location , including in the premises of Wikimedia Germany in Berlin . In 2019 there were two pre-produced, pure interview issues with Jan-Marco Luczak and Lorenz Maroldt

The publication takes place simultaneously on the podcast label küchenstud.io operated by Banse , which also houses the kitchen radio , and other platforms, e.g. B. iTunes , Spotify and YouTube .

The advertising marketer of ARD (AS&S Radio) announced in September 2017 that the state of the nation will be marketed by them in the future. In September 2018, blogger Thomas Knüwer came to the conclusion that the maximum possible income would be “between 15,750 and 22,500 euros” per broadcast. In addition, there would be ticket sales for live performances.

Reception and awards

In her review of the broadband broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur , Meike Laaff said that the podcast was “really good [...] when it comes to digital, legal and civil rights” due to the moderators' expertise. Outside of these subject areas, however, the podcast "quickly [...] loses its analytical depth"; She cited environmental policy and “certain foreign policy issues” as examples.

The iTunes editors awarded the State of the Union as “Best Political Podcast 2016”.

On January 29, 2018, the State of the Union was named “Best Podcast of the Year” 2017 in the “The Golden Bloggers” competition based on an online vote. In February 2018, the computer magazine c't described the Nation as a “Shooting Star in the German Podcast Landscape”.

On March 7, 2019, Buermeyer and Banse were guests in Neo Magazin Royale .
