Geography and history

The lake of volcanic origin, as well as the basins around Lake Bracciano , Lake Monterosi , Stracciacappa and Valle di Baccano, the latter two of which have now dried up. It is one of the last craters of the Vulcano Sabatino , which went out about 40,000 years ago and then filled with water.

He has been since the Bronze Age , around 1,500 BC. BC, populated. The Romans built several villas on the shore. They visited the lake for summer freshness and used the water through the aqueduct of Aqua Alsietina , which was built in 2 BC. BC was built by Augustus to supply the Naumachia in Trastevere , which was dedicated to Julius Caesar . The area around the lake was only depopulated during the migration period , as people sought protection in the fortified cities.

Today there are no settlements on the lake apart from a few agricultural buildings and since it is not accessible by roads, the lake remained almost untouched. Today it is a popular destination for bathers, hikers and canoeists .

The exterior shots in the fairy's house for the Pinocchio film series from 1972 took place here.
