The Lake Atiamuri is the river system of the Waikato River belonging Reservoir on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

A-Tia-Muri literally means “turned around” in the Māori language and refers to the exploration of the Tia of the Arawa canoe . The intrepid traveler had to turn around at the Atiamuri rapids during his early explorations of the Waikato River . Legend also has it that Tia was petrified into a large stone in the rapids.

The 2.2 km 2 large Lake Atiamuri is located around 25 km north of the city of Taupo and around 35 km southwest of Rotorua . The reservoir consists of two arms, one that extends in the valley of the former river bed of the Waikato River and has a length of around 7 km and the second arm, which consists of the former river bed of the Whangapoa Stream and extends over 4.3 km meanders north into the mountain landscape. The width of the two arms vary between 30 and 440 m and the height of the lake, depending on the water level, between 249.07 m and 253.09 m, with a maximum lake depth of 31 m. Its immediate water catchment area is 285 km 2 .

The reservoir can be reached from New Zealand State Highway 1 , which leads 500 m south of the dam and the power station.

Administratively, the lake belongs to the Waikato region .

The Lake Atiamuri follow one after the reservoirs Lake Whakamaru , Lake Maraetai , Lake Waipapa , Lake Arapuni and Lake Karapiro , the reservoirs Lake Ohakuri and Lake Aratiatia go ahead of him.

history

The reservoir and the associated Atiamuri hydropower plant were commissioned in 1958 and, after being expanded in 1961, were designed for a nominal output of 90  MW . As of 2020, the operator of the hydropower plant is the majority state-owned company Mercury NZ Limited .

Sightseeing

To the southwest of the dam on the south bank of the Waikato River rises the 520 m high Mount Pōhaturoa , a significant mountain for the Māori tribe Ngāti Raukawa .
