Lance Selwyn Cousins (born April 7, 1942 in Hitchin , Hertfordshire , Great Britain , † March 14, 2015 in Oxford ) was a leading British scholar in the field of Buddhism research .

Live and act

Cousins ​​studied history and oriental studies at Cambridge University , including Sanskrit with Sir Harold Bailey and Middle Indian with KR Norman . With Norman he received his doctorate with a thesis on Saṃyutta Nikāya ṭīkā. He then worked as a lecturer in the Department of Comparative Religion at the University of Manchester . There he taught on the subjects of Buddhism , Hinduism , mysticism in the world religions, Pali and Sanskrit and worked on the board of the English Pali Text Society . In the 1990s he became a Fellow at the Wolfson College of the University of Oxford and was a member of the of Richard Gombrich founded Oxford Center for Buddhist Studies . Cousins published important scientific work in the field of Pali - Buddhism and Abhidhamma . From 2002-2003 he was President of the Pali Text Society . Cousins ​​has received numerous awards for his scientific work, including an honorary professorship from Mahamakut Buddhist University , Bangkok , Thailand .

In Cambridge, Cousins ​​had met the Thai ex-monk and meditation teacher Boonman Poonyathiro , whose form of samatha meditation inspired him very much. He was a founding member of the English Samatha Trust , the Samatha Association , the Manchester Center for Buddhist Meditation in Chorlton-cum-Hardy and initiated Samatha meditation groups at all universities where he taught. In his work as a meditation teacher, he has led retreats in Great Britain , Ireland , the USA and Sri Lanka .
