State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter Terrorism

The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism (LVT) is the name of the office responsible for the protection of the constitution at the state level in Austria . Contrary to what the name suggests, it is a federal agency and set up as an organizational unit of the respective state police directorate (LPD). The legal basis is the Security Police Act (SPG) and the Police State Protection Act .

The LVT were launched at the same time as the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter Terrorism (BVT). It was founded in 2002 when the state police departments of the federal police departments and the security departments of each federal state were combined in a state office for the protection of the constitution and the fight against terrorism, which was part of the respective state security department. With the installation of the state police headquarters from September 2012, the fight against terrorism was bundled in the BVT and the respective LVT was renamed the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution . In March 2017, the state offices were renamed again. The LVT have their headquarters in the respective state capital .
