The Long Bridge ( Polish ul. Długie Pobrzeże , Kashubian Dłudżé Mòstë ) is a 480 meter long road along the Motława (Motława) in Gdansk . It begins at the Green Gate (Brama Zielona) in the right town and ends at the Häkertor (Brama Straganiarska). The Gdańsk fish market (Targ Rybny) connects to them there . The extension now bears the street name ul. Rybackie Pobrzeże (translated fish bridge ).

The Long Bridge was the quayside of the old Danzig harbor . It has served as a waterfront promenade and a pier for excursions since the 19th century.

history

In the Middle Ages there was a bridge in front of each of the Gdańsk water gates , that is, a pier on stilts. Their names Bread Bank Bridge, Frauenbrücke, Heiliggeistbrücke were derived from the names of the gates. Depending on the type of ships that were unloaded there, they had different widths and heights. The long bridge , documented in 1385 as “pons longus” ( Latin ), however, ran along the granaries on the opposite bank. The pier from the Koggentor (later the Green Gate) to the Brotbänkentor was called Kleine Brücke around 1400 . Over the years the piers have been lengthened, connected to one another and the heights have been adjusted. Since 1592 the bridge along the waterside city wall of the Rechtstadt has been called the Long Bridge . Around 1611 this was extended to the Großer Kran (crane gate) and later extended first to the Johannistor and then to the Häkertor. The section between Kran and Heilig-Geist-Tor was called Weinbrücke until 1809 .

The Long Bridge was continued over the fish market area until 1861. At the beginning of the 20th century, reinforced concrete replaced the wooden structure. The first pier for passenger shipping was built in 1840 at Johannistor. The steamships drove to the New Harbor, to the spa island of Westerplatte , to the ports along the Danzig Bay : Sopot , Hela , Heisternest and Kahlberg as well as to Heubude and Bohnsack on the Vistula .

In March 1945, the buildings along the Long Bridge were almost completely destroyed. During the reconstruction, north of the crane gate was rebuilt in a modern style since 1958. The water gates were reconstructed based on medieval models. In the years 1965–1967 the system was given new walls under the waterline, until 1973 a new, lowered quay from the Green Gate to the Crane Gate was built as a berth for the passenger ships. The pedestrian zone was laid out with granite slabs until 1979 and designed as a promenade.

Between 1983 and 1988 the buildings on the bank front between Frauen- and Krantor were completed. The model was based on the view from around 1900. They house cafes, restaurants and shops. The Hanza Hotel was built in 1999 north of the crane gate. The modern buildings of “Skład Kolonialny”, which disrupted the overall picture, were torn down again. Since 2012, the new building of the Maritime Cultural Center (Ośrodek Kultury Morskiej) has been attached to the crane gate in its place.

During construction work on May 6, 2019, part of the Long Bridge in the area of ​​the Heiliggeisttor collapsed. The cause was construction work to build a pedestrian bridge to the northern part of the Speicherinsel . The repairs delayed the completion of the swing bridge . This was moved to its warehouse in August 2019 and opened to the public on two Christmas days on a trial basis. The building is scheduled to open in April 2020. In the further course, this area is to be redesigned by 2023.
