Young fish have very long, dorsal and anal fins. They live close to the coast over sandy soil, shallow coral reefs or under driftwood and drifting brown algae of the genus Sargassum .

Adult fish get a more discus-shaped shape, the fins are no longer so high in relation to the body, the body becomes silver-gray. They live in small or larger groups of up to 100 specimens, in deeper lagoons, inner reefs, and outer reefs. You can often see them on shipwrecks.
