The long-stemmed man's shield ( Androsace elongata ), also known as the steppe man's shield , is a species of plant in the primrose family (Primulaceae). It occurs rarely to very rarely in Central Europe .

description

inflorescence
Shank with fork hair
umbel

The long-stemmed man's shield grows as an annual herbaceous plant , has no sterile shoots and reaches a height of 2 to 5 cm. All parts of the plant are covered with star hair, the leaves and calyx parts are often bald or bare. The leaves arranged in a basal rosette are lanceolate and pointed, serrated or with entire margins.

The inflorescence shafts arise in several from the axils of the upper leaves. The umbellate inflorescence is spread out and multi-flowered. The flower stalks are very thin and considerably longer than the bracts at flowering time. The calyx is bell-shaped, 4 to 5 mm long and divided almost to the middle. The crown is white, has a yellow throat, is about 3 mm long and shorter than the calyx. It blooms in April and May, in fallow fields also in August.

The capsule is spherical, 3 mm long and shorter than the calyx. The seeds are abundant, roundish-angular in shape and about 0.5 × 0.75 mm in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

distribution

General distribution

Androsace elongata occurs in Southeast Europe, Central and Southern Russia to East Asia. Very rare in Central Europe. The species is completely absent in Switzerland.

Androsace elongata is a species of the eastern steppe areas, which finds its western border in Central Europe.

Distribution in Germany

The long-handled man's shield is rare in Germany and can only be found on the Middle Rhine, in the Wetterau, in the Nahe Valley, the Thuringian Basin, the Franconian Keuper area and the Middle Elbe.

Distribution in Austria

The steppe man's shield rarely occurs in Austria in the federal states of Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland in the colline to submontane altitude range. The deposits are concentrated in the Pannonian area . The species is considered endangered.

Location

The long-stalked man's shield grows on dry grassland, in schiller grass fields, grain-weed communities and on fallow fields. He prefers dry, warm, often low-lime clay and sand loam soils. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Sedo albi-Veronicion dillenii association, but also occurs in societies of the Alysso-Sedion albi.

Subspecies

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Androsace elongata subsp. elongata
  • Androsace elongata subsp. breistrofferi (Charpin & Greuter) Molero & JM Monts. : It occurs in Spain and France.
