Berto Lardera - actually: Roberto Lardera (born December 18, 1911 in La Spezia , Italy , † 1989 in Paris , France ) was an Italian-French sculptor.

biography

Lardera was born in 1911 in La Spezia, Italy, the son of a shipyard worker. He completed the classical studies at the University of Florence. He taught himself the art of sculpture and sculpture as an autodidact .

Lardera's sculptures are essentially metal sculptures that were particularly monumental in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the sculptures Lardera processed the impressions from his childhood, when he was shaped by the impressions of the work in the shipyards.

In 1942 Lardera had his first solo exhibition in Milan. In 1947 Lardera moved to Paris, where he lived and worked until his death in 1989. In 1965 he took French citizenship. In Paris he began with exhibitions in the "Galerie Denise René", later in the "Salon de Mai" and in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles . In 1948, 1950 and 1952 Lardera participated in the Venice Biennale and represented Italy there. He was a participant in documenta 1 , documenta II and documenta III in 1955, 1959 and 1964 in Kassel .

Lardera's sculptures in Europe, America and Japan show the use of a wide range of different metals in different dimensions. Initially rather flat and two-dimensional, his work later became more diverse, multi-dimensional and varied.

Lardera was a visiting professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1961 .
