Larry and the Handjive is a German band that was founded in 1986 in Bremen . The band is committed to the authentic sound of rock 'n' roll and beat of the 1950s and 1960s.

history

Larry and the Handjive was founded in 1986 by Larry Ferry and Larry Bexman; the band name was based on the song Willie and the Handjive by Johnny Otis . The band soon became known beyond the borders of Bremen as a live act in the style of the 1950s and 1960s. Her trademark is the authentic sound, which is achieved through the use of original instruments and amplifiers as well as through intensive examination of the playing and sound techniques of the 1960s.

The repertoire includes songs by Elvis Presley , Chuck Berry , the Beatles , the Rolling Stones and the Kinks , among others . With the song Komm Kleine Tina , for which Larry and the Handjive wrote the lyrics and arrangement themselves, the band was able to book their first television and radio appearances in 1989.

Larry and the Handjive have been accompanying Tony Sheridan regularly since 1989 . In the 1990s in particular, tours throughout Germany and a large number of television appearances followed, such as in the ZDF show Let's Have A Party with Thomas Gottschalk . As a tour band of Dave Dee ( Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich ), Larry and the Handjive were on the road for several years until Dee's death in early 2009. Even Lee Curtis ( Star-Club ), Casey Jones ( Casey Jones & The Governors ) and Chris Andrews could be several times by Larry and the accompanying Handjive.

Live recordings with Tony Sheridan and Dave Dee were released on the television series Vinyl . Since January 2008, Larry and the Handjive have been the official (Beat Club) house band for the Beat Club and Friends revival series of events hosted by Radio Bremen , moderated by Jörg Sonntag and Dirk Böhling and with Uschi Nerke from beginning to end 2013 participated. In addition, the band gives around 30 to 40 concerts a year all over Germany.

reception

The “Bremer Kultband” ( Weser-Kurier ) is assigned a “particularly powerful rhythm foundation ”, which the band members attribute to early hard rock experiences. The Stader Tageblatt writes that Larry and the Handjive “delighted” the audience at a regular Oldie Night in Hemmoor “in recent years […] with their hung music and phenomenal stage presence”, the Cuxhaven News located the musicians Larry and the Handjive as “audience favorites” at the same series of events and the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung saw the band “around 3,000 visitors […] reminisce” at an open-air performance .
