Larry vs Harry is a Danish bicycle manufacturer from Copenhagen . The company manufactures the Bullitt cargo bikes that are sold worldwide . The name of the company and the bike goes back to the two company founders: Lars Malmborg (Larry) and Hans "Bullitt" Fogh (Harry). According to the company, the company name Larry vs (lat. Versus , against) Harry comes from the fact that the two company owners sometimes had opposing opinions when developing the Bullitt product .

history

The company follows the tradition of the Danish Long Johns . They were built for decades from around 1930. The manufacturer Smith & Co in Odense was sold and production in Denmark ceased in 1997. Larry vs Harry developed the idea of the cargo bike further, built its Bullitt bikes with an aluminum frame from 2011 and equipped them with more modern components. They are used by many bicycle courier companies.

The name Bullitt goes back to a nickname of one of the two company founders, Hans "Bullitt" Fogh.

product

The Bullitt cargo bike is Larry vs Harry's own patented design. Like Long John and Veeno, it is a muzzle loader, with a deep loading area between the handlebars and the front wheel. The steering movement is transmitted via a linkage. The wheel is offset to the front by the length of the loading area. Front wheel and handlebar are stored separately. The newer models all have an aluminum frame ( aluminum 7005, T6 heat-treated), but a CroMoly steel fork and are equipped with hydraulically operated disc brakes and modern hub or derailleur gears. The maximum load including the driver is specified as 180 kg. The limiting factors here are more wheels and tires than the frame. The wheels have a diameter of 20 inches at the front and 26 inches at the rear, and the frame allows tires up to 2 "(51 mm) wide. In 2015, a Bullitt with Shimano-Steps electric drive was released in which the bottom bracket mount on the frame was adapted for the electric motor .

A model extension with toothed belts (Gates Carbon Drive) will be available from 2016 . The frame, which was built in 2016, now has a separation point in the right seat stay so that such a belt can be inserted ( running around the chain stay).

After opening a quick release clamp on the handlebars, the handlebars can be raised up to 100 mm higher by means of a rise-up, which, in addition to ergonomic adjustment, may also be necessary so that the stem and handlebars including the brake levers protrude over higher loads - especially when turning to be able to. With enough practice, this can also be done while driving, as the handlebars remain connected to the vertical steering column with almost no play via a sliding guide with a groove.

The bike (version 2016) with 9-speed derailleur, hydraulic disc brakes, plastic-aluminum mudguards weighs around 25 kg without any additional attachments.

Drive variants

The manufacturer offers the Bullitt in different versions:

  • Fixed gear fixie
  • Input gear with freewheel hub
  • with derailleur
  • with hub gear
  • with Pinion bottom bracket
  • as a frame set, for "customized" construction by the customer
  • Electric bike with Shimano STePS motor installed in the frame with modified bottom bracket mount (from 2018)
  • Electric bike with Pinion bottom bracket and Neodrive wheel hub motor in the rear wheel (from 2019)

Color and design variants

The frame is made of a welded aluminum alloy, but the fork is made of steel, both are powder-coated . Depending on the basic color, the frame has its own design with a name related to this color.

  • Yellow (with red-orange graphics) - Submarine with musical notes alluding to the song and film (1968) of the Beatles.
  • Orange - Clockwork , black bowler hat of the character Alex in reference to the cult film Clockwork Orange ; new design version without black elements
  • Red - Pepper , formerly Red
  • White (with a little blue) - Milk Plus , fictional drink from the Moloko Milk Bar in the movie Orange Clockwork
  • White (with black bottom bracket area and blue-white-red transition) - Superfly "11", special model from 2011 with 11-speed Shimano Alfine gear hub.
  • Black - Classic , like the original Long John type
  • Dark Green ( British Racing Green ) - Race
  • Medium Green - Lizzard King , a tribute to Jim Morrison
  • Hellblau - Bluebird , Bluebird '71 (Eng. Hut warbler , in North America native bird genus)
  • Dark blue - indigo with a branch of the indigo plant
  • Pink - TNT after the explosives (small edition in the early days) and special model “Miss Bullitt” for the company's ten-year anniversary in 2018
  • Natural aluminum - , pure aluminum or raw , clear lacquered frame, same price
  • Color of choice - around 250 € extra
  • Dark brown - Sugar

The design of a basic color has changed over the years in details, such as the lettering. The packaging box for the delivery of the Bullit (2017) shows full-surface b / w graphics with Bullitt-driving hippies on all sides .

Available superstructures

The manufacturer offers different structures:

  • Base plate for the loading area made of sandwich material (honeycomb, dark brown, structured surface) with a kink for installation in the "ladder" of the loading bay. The horizontal part has 5 round recesses in the contour to leave space for the 4 vertical-cylindrical mounting sleeves, which are welded on the inside of the longitudinal bars and the steering column. If the plate rests on the rungs of the ladder, the tops of the plate and sleeves form a level. A flexible plastic hinge forms the hinge to the front part of the plate, which fits into the rising part of the ladder. The screw connection through the three 10 mm holes in each of the ladder rungs protrudes by about 3 mm by the height of the button head. The plate allows small things to be placed and prevents the load from sliding onto the front wheel when braking. There is still an air gap of around 3 mm between the plate and the longitudinal struts so that a lashing strap can be threaded through. Load is about 1.5 cm higher on the plate than on the ladder rungs and then sees a correspondingly less high form fit (about 1 cm) with the longitudinal spars at the side, which is necessary when blows from uneven road surfaces cause loose load to jump a few centimeters high.
  • Vertically transverse board, to be screwed to the side frame tubes in front of the steering column with straps. Can have pockets attached to the back.
  • Box with side walls, also dark brown.
  • Canopy - child transport cabin, which is covered with textile. The two roll bars on the side snap into the cylindrical eyelets on the bottom of the Bullitt. The cabin requires the base plate and protrudes significantly over the frame with a width of around 60 cm.
  • Billboard for the frame square under the top tube. Own variant for bikes with electric drive.

technology

The wheels are equipped with aluminum rims and typically with 36 2 mm spokes. Only the almost 1 m long kinked rod tube with a diameter of around 18 mm, which transfers the steering movement to the fork and the rotating, vertical handlebar tube, is made of steel.

The frame-wide two-legged stand, which can be folded down and down under the loading bay, is made of welded aluminum tubing and is available in particularly heavy-duty CrMo steel for an extra charge . The cap-shaped plastic feet wear out within 2 years of intensive, heavy bike use. On some Bullits, the fastening screws of the stop buffers for the "Drive" position hit small notches in the frame, as they are screwed in a little too little. This small malfunction is associated with a stopping noise and can be compensated for by the fact that the - human - foot slows down the folding a little, which reduces the noise when folding in at all.

The widest part of the bike is the handlebar, about 50–60 cm wide. At the loading bay, the frame itself has its greatest width of 466 mm. A good 400 mm distance remains within the highly oval (30 × 80 mm) longitudinal tubes, which means that 40 cm wide standard boxes made of plastic or cardboard boxes, such as vegetable crates, banana boxes, fit in on the sides and also rest on small cross members, but also on the two front of the four cylindrical ones Mounting sleeves. The loading bay is flat at the bottom to a length of about 67 cm. After a rounding of about 5 cm, the front part of the frame ladder, which leads to the fork's head tube, begins at a horizontal distance of about 72 cm in front of the steering column. Without a base plate (available from 15 mm honeycomb plate) (40 cm narrow, rectangular) load must be secured against sliding forwards when braking so as not to hit the front wheel or its mudguard . However, sufficiently wider cargo can across standing sideways to be placed the longitudinal bars. A (welded) kink with a rounded interior prevents the load from hitting the front wheel forwards. The possible width of goods placed across the frame is limited by the decreasing inclination freedom. Mortar troughs are available inexpensively in dimensions that fit well in the loading bay. A standard bicycle can be carefully placed on the trough edge and transported securely.

The frame has 3 pairs of screw eyes - for example for attaching a bottle holder. One on the seat tube (front) and one on each of the two vertical frame tubes (rear). Welded brackets with grooves for attaching Bowden cables and brake lines are plentiful. They are always oriented parallel or transversely to the pipe, which, especially at the last point on the front left of the (still parallel) ascending ladder pipe, would not ideally lead the line to the hydraulic brake on the front wheel.

Particularly long items can be placed standing on the loading area, here across or diagonally. A glazier in Berlin has made lateral mounts on the right to attach a narrow window sash upright to the side of the frame. Due to the width of the frame, there is enough space for the driver's right leg, also for support when standing.

Long items can also be loaded horizontally in the middle, protruding towards the front, for example a door leaf 1 × 2 m; for this it is necessary to build a support on the tip of the frame ladder. A thick board made of softer wood with a width of at least 10 cm, a thickness of 4–5 cm and a length of 25–46 cm is provided with a 53 mm hole in the center, which is slightly beveled on one side. This hole fits with a little play around the newer, conical head tube at the "bow tip" and sits with the bevel on the ladder rails arriving here. There is a distance of about 85 cm from the lower rear inner corner of the cargo bay to this wooden cross member. Loads longer than 170 cm must be lashed down at the back so as not to tip over at the front due to excess weight. With a sufficiently high box in the bay as a support, a door leaf can also be transported almost horizontally, which increases the overall length somewhat, but reduces air resistance and improves the view of the road somewhat.

In order to be able to park a Bullit as space-saving as possible on a wall, its handlebar width should be rather small (not much more than the frame width of 466 mm, i.e. 50–53 cm). In order to leave more space for bulky goods in front of the handlebar, including the brake levers, a shorter stem and short brake lines (possibly also shift cables) are advantageous.

In the case of particularly heavy loads, care should be taken to ensure sufficient tire pressure, a low center of gravity, lashing with frictional and positive locking to absorb high deceleration forces when braking sharply, raising the handlebars to make balancing when stationary and when driving away, avoiding bumps and steps around dynamic Reduce stress, classify your strength and gain momentum on inclines. Standing up requires more force and can be made easier by a slight incline.

To pull up to the rear to unfold the stand - held with one foot - it is convenient to stand (left) next to the bike and pull the handlebars with both hands. If the bike is not heavily loaded, it can be lifted slightly at the rear edge of the saddle and, with the front wheel turned to the right, pushed a little forward and thus brought it close to the wall.

The steering linkage on the right-hand side limits the turning of the front wheel to the left when the tire starts to rub against the linkage near the bend. To the right, a stop is only realized on the steering lever at the bottom of the steering column. With a strong right turn, due to the stretched kinematics between the tie rod and fork steering lever, the fork can snap over to the right in a strongly angled position if unfavorable forces act on the front wheel. This can be reversed without dismantling the rods.

Chronology of the model development

Limited special model "Miss Bullitt" for the 10th company anniversary (2018)
  • 2014 or earlier: Each frame color has its own graphic design and name (e.g. (Yellow) Submarine , (White) Extra Milk )
  • ? (after 2011): Milled rear dropouts, replaceable with screws. Variants for hub and derailleur gears.
  • 2011 still: seat tube tapered cylindrically at the bottom to mount a front derailleur with clamp. Later E-type assembly for front derailleurs, covered with black plastic cover.
  • 2015: Conical control head and conical or stepped steerer ( Tapered -Gabelschaft and - rate ) is generally introduced. More resistant to bending, more durable, the steering head protrudes less high above the "bow tip" of the cargo bay.
  • 2015: With Shimano STePS E6100, an electric motor, integrated on the bottom bracket in the frame, is introduced for a Bullitt for the first time. From May 2015 for the first time only in black, from August 2015 in other colors. - The type STePS E8000 will follow later.
  • 2016: The right saddle strut can be opened in order to be able to install a toothed belt for the drive.
  • 2018: Special model "Miss Bullitt" for the company's ten-year anniversary in pink paint

Modifications, accessories from other manufacturers

  • From 2011 urban-e, Pentagon Sales GmbH, Ellwangen , D equipped Bullits with an aluminum case and a hub motor in the front wheel . The iBullits were tested in the research project I replace a car from 2012 to 2014, drove a total of around 500,000 km and delivered 125,000 consignments.
  • Urban-e supplies shaped aluminum boxes for the loading bay of the Bullitt. The lid, which is hinged on the right, can be locked or left hanging downwards with an opening angle of 270 ° so that the box can be used as an open trough. The standard box is 545 mm wide and holds 200 liters. The Maxibox with 270 liters is 725 mm wide and has a (L x W) 610 × 670 mm hatch.
  • Order bike, Berlin offers Shorty, a shortened Bullitt in the loading bay.
  • Steering damper from Larry vs Harry, is recommended by Velogold, Hanover for the transport of heavy loads at high speeds. The Bullitt is stiffly loaded with cargo with a high moment of inertia (around the vertical axis) (about 20 kg, 3 m long wooden slats, protruding to the front, firmly lashed) from a certain driving speed, with the handlebars held loosely or only with one hand, so that the front wheel begins to swing too executes wide steering oscillations until it experiences sufficient damping again.
  • With a Bionx motor in the rear wheel, Marcus Stöckel turned a Bullitt with a Riese & Müller rear swing arm into a fully and covered 20,000 km in winter from 2011-2013.
  • The lightest Bullitt at 15.42 kg was achieved in 2013/2014 by Marc Poth and Marcus Stöckel in Darmstadt through conversion and replacement of parts of the frame: carbon fiber was used in the ladder rungs, 2 vertical tubes, fork, steering linkage, handlebars, seat post, dropouts and one delicate side stand for use. Brake lines were led down in the steering column, and the loading bay was covered with a belt net. The headset integrates a steering stop. It is switched electrically.
  • Punta Velo GmbH has been producing various (e) Bullitt extensions under the brand name Convoy-Products since 2015. It will u. a. Aluminum boxes with special security locks in 5 sizes - 160 liters to 315 liters volume - are offered especially for commercial use . In addition, the aluminum EVO-Box is available in different versions, which were especially - but not only - designed to take one or two children with you.

Trivia

Svajerløb

Historically, special national championships for cargo bikes (Svajerløb) have been held in Denmark since 1942. There are different categories according to participants (men, women, team) or according to type of cargo bike (two-wheeler, tricycle). These races are also enjoying increasing popularity and participants internationally, for example in Berlin, Christchurch or Rio De Janeiro. The two-wheeled Bullitt "leans into the curve", is suitable for sporty driving and is represented in these races. The European Championships 2011 and 2012, the World Championships 2009, 2012 and 2015 and all Danish championships since 2009 (except 2013) have been won on Bullitt.

In 2011, only 50 of the Superfly color and technology variant with 11-speed gear hub will be delivered. Due to the design element "No. 11" in the red circle of jagged teeth, at least one dealer in Stuhr , Germany offers its copy as "No. 11 of 50 pieces worldwide!" on.

Sporting records

On September 3, 2015, the Danish professional cyclist Rasmus Quaade set the unofficial world record for cargo bikes in the time trial over 2000 m on a Bullitt on the tarmac of the disused military airfield Værløse (DK). For this purpose, his bike was loaded with a 28 kg load and thus came to a total weight of 50 kg. He needed a time of 2:50 minutes for the route, so he reached an average speed of 42.35 km / h.

In July 2016, the amateur rider Kevin Labeeuw achieved an average speed of 35.93 km / h while attempting to set an hourly world record on the “ Odiel Defraeyecycling track in Rumbeke (B). The events have no relation to the UCI and, similar to Svajerløb, are held for entertainment with sporting ambition.

On the slightly inclined asphalt forecourt of the Steinhalle in the Austrian town of Lannach , Raimund Blaser, chairman of the RadlTrialGraz association, managed a wheelie ride over a distance of more than 10 meters on 25 June 2017 with the ARGUS bike lobby. The chain-shifted Bullitt (2016) weighed around 25 kg with mudguards, the handlebars were raised by 100 mm.
