Lars Kristinus Larsen (born August 6, 1948 in Hurup, today Thisted Kommune ; † August 19, 2019 in Silkeborg ) was a Danish entrepreneur . He was the founder and owner of the JYSK group (Danish bed warehouse) and was considered the fourth richest man in Denmark . In 2010, his personal wealth was estimated at 17.5 billion Danish kroner (approx. 2.4 billion euros).

Life

Larsen came from a humble background. He was born in Hurup in Thy in northwest Denmark. After his apprenticeship, which he completed in a craft business, he was employed in a furniture store. For his business idea of running a chain of stores as a bed warehouse, he was able to win a small bank in Vodskov near Aalborg . The group still maintains a bank account with her today.

His success began with the opening of a specialty shop for bedroom furniture (Jysk Sengetøjslager) in Aarhus on April 2, 1979 the surprising additional stores in Europe and America followed. Larsen became known for his commercials on Danish television, where he sold inexpensive goods with a Jutian accent without further ado, sometimes cuddled up in blankets and pillows.

Larsen was criticized because of the working conditions of his employees, who had to work a lot of overtime without remuneration.

In June 2019, Larsen announced that he had liver cancer and was therefore handing over his role as Chairman of the Board of JYSK Holding A / S to his son Jacob Brunsborg. Larsen died on August 19, 2019 in his home town of Silkeborg.

Oddities

Larsen distributed his autobiography to all Danish households in connection with the company's 25th anniversary in 2004 . The more than 2.4 million copies made the book the largest edition in which a Danish title had ever appeared. Since around a fifth of the population said they had read the book, Larsen became one of Denmark's most widely read authors.

Larsen's nickname Dyne-Larsen comes from the Danish word for "upper bed", dyne .
