Larsenianthus wardianus is a species ofthe ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It was first described in 2010 and is native to northern Myanmar.

description

Larsenianthus wardianus grows as an evergreen , herbaceous plant that can reach heights of up to 1.25 meters. The fibrous rhizomes are fragrant and can reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters. The inside is colored white. The species forms tubers . The leafy shoots are erect and stand in dense groups of ten to twenty.

Each stem has four to five stalked leaves which are egg-shaped with a length of up to 67 centimeters and a width of about 14 centimeters. The dark green upper side of the leaf is hairless. The underside of the leaf has a hairless, green central rib. The leaf base tapers towards the petiole while the tip is pointed. The coated, green and hairless petiole is up to 52 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters thick. Its edges are slightly rolled back. At the base the stems have reddish, hairless leaf sheaths , which can reach a length of around 30 centimeters and a width of around 5 centimeters. The small, paper-like ligules are about 1 centimeter long and about 1 millimeter wide. They are clipped on the stem and not lobed. They lack older leaves.

The stalked inflorescence is formed as a winding thyrsus at the tip of leafless shoots and can reach a total length of up to 33 centimeters. The hairless stalk is up to 20 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 centimeters thick. It is enclosed by leaf sheaths, the lower ones being red and the upper ones green. The egg-shaped inflorescence is 6 to 10 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide. It has up to 40 bracts , the lowest one or two being sterile. These are light green in color and have a reddish tip, are around 3.7 centimeters long and about 2.4 centimeters wide. Each bract has three to four conspicuous single flowers. The non-tubular bracts are about 2.1 inches long and 1.6 inches wide and are pale white in color and have a reddish tip.

The flowers have triple lobed, pale yellow to pink sepals , which are tubular in shape with a length of about 1.5 centimeters. The reddish pink petals are around 3.2 long and about 0.2 inches thick. The flower tubes are lobed, with each lobe about 1.4 long and bent back. The red colored and cup-shaped staminodes are around 3 millimeters long and around 2 millimeters thick. The red and yellow at the tip labellum is about 2.2 centimeters long and at its widest point about 0.3 centimeters wide and is linear to spatula-shaped. It is hairless and not lobed. The fertile stamens are around 2.1 centimeters along with the stamens and are colored red in the lower part and yellow in the upper part. The anthers are about 3 millimeters and about 2 millimeters wide and carry the pale yellow pollen . Each flower has two linearly shaped ovaries . Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds.

distribution and habitat

Larsenianthus wardianus has only been found on the foothills of the Himalayas in Kachin State in northern Myanmar . The species grows there in the undergrowth of evergreen forests which are mostly formed by wing fruit plants (Dipterocarpaceae).
