Laurence Bishop Hobgood (born December 23, 1959 in Salisbury , North Carolina ) is an American jazz pianist and arranger .

Live and act

Hobgood, whose father Drama, u. a. taught at Catawba College and Southern Methodist University , grew up in Texas and Illinois. In Dallas, he began taking classical piano lessons at the age of six and performed publicly with his own variations on Bach and Chopin themes; At the age of twelve he began to deal with the blues and was then an electric pianist in a country band for three years. In Illinois, during his high school years, he was into jazz ; he then studied classical and jazz music at the University of Illinois / Champaign-Urbana.

After graduating, he moved to Chicago, founded his own trio and also worked with Fareed Haque . In 1992 he formed the New Trio with Paul Wertico and bassist Eric Hochberg , from which the formation Union emerged (with bassist Brian Torff ). He also worked with the saxophonist Ed Peterson , with whom he appeared at the Green Mill , and in the early 1990s in Chicago with the singer Eden Atwood , with whom he first recorded. During this time the long-term collaboration with the singer Kurt Elling began , whose pianist, keyboardist and musical director Hobgood acted. In addition, he presented a number of albums under his own name, u. a. with Charlie Haden . His collaboration with Elling also resulted in several Grammy nominations, including a. also for the album Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman , which received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2010 .

In the field of jazz he was involved in 36 recording sessions between 1993 and 2014, including a. also with Bob Belden , Brad Wheeler , Jim Gailloreto, Jackie Allen, John Moulder, Rob Parton and Tommy McCann. He has also performed with Clark Terry , Gary Burton , Eddie Daniels , Sheila Jordan , Bob Mintzer and Mark Whitfield . In 2016 he presented the album Honor Thy Fathers , on which John Patitucci and Kendrick Scott participated.
