Laurentius Norrmannus , originally Lars Norrman , also Normann or Norrmann (born April 24, 1651 in Norrby gård in the parish of Jäder (now part of Eskilstuna ), Södermanland ; † May 21, 1703 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish philologist and Lutheran theologian.

Life

After attending school in Strängnäs, Norrmannus studied at Uppsala University from 1668 to 1679 and then went on a study trip to Germany (including a visit to Esdras Edzardus in Hamburg) and Holland. After his return in 1681 he became a private librarian with Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie . Appointed associate professor for Greek and Hebrew in Uppsala in 1682, he received an appointment as full professor for the same subjects at Lund University in December of the same year . He did not take up the position, however, but stayed in Uppsala, where he was promoted to full professor of logic and metaphysics in 1684. In 1685 he changed to the professorship for Greek, in 1693 to a theological professorship. Ordained in 1695 , he received the vicarage of Vaksala as prebender. In 1698 he also took over the management of the university library. In May 1702 he was promoted to first professor of the theological faculty and also took over the office of provost at Uppsala Cathedral . In December of the same year he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Gothenburg and consecrated on May 3, 1703 for this office. However, he died before he left for his new place of employment.

Norrmannus served three times (1688, 1695 and 1701) as rector of Uppsala University. His publications were mainly devoted to classical literature, so he edited the speech Presbeutikòs pròs Achilléa des Aelius Aristides . Erik Benzelius the Younger was one of his students .
