Laurentius Surius

Laurentius Surius (* 1522 in Lübeck , † May 23, 1578 in Cologne ) was a German Carthusian monk , Catholic hagiographer and writer.

Life

Surius studied in Frankfurt (Oder) and then in Cologne . There he made the acquaintance of Petrus Canisius , who convinced him to devote his life to science and teaching. Johannes Justus von Landsberg persuaded Surius to enter the monastery and with effect from February 23, 1541 he began his novitiate in the Carthusian monastery in Cologne. The following year, on February 23, 1542, he took his religious vows and in 1543 he was ordained a priest .

Except for a brief interruption, Surius stayed in his Cologne monastery until the end of his life and worked as a writer. Pope Pius V , to whom Surius had dedicated the first volume of his work The Life of the Saints , asked the prior of the Carthusian monastery, "the learned man should be allowed a relaxation of the rules of the order".

At the age of 55, Laurentius Surius died on May 23rd in Cologne, where he found his final resting place.

With his Commentarius , Surius corresponded with Johannes Carion and Johannes Sleidanus in 1566 . This work was published in Latin and was translated into German as early as 1558 by auxiliary bishop Heinrich Fabricius . In 1571 it was translated into French by Jacques Estourneau . Michael van Isselt published this work in 1586 (and a second time in 1601) together with a commentary.
