Origin and development

In the Middle Ages, Enkheim did not have an independent parish, but the place belonged together with Bergen and Seckbach to the parish of the Kirchberg parish. It is named after the Kirchberg church , first mentioned in 1210 . The Gothic church, which according to historical reports is the largest in eastern Frankfurt, was demolished around the middle of the 18th century. The church was located in the Seckbacher district not far from Bergen and Enkheim on today's Wilhelmshöher Straße.

At the beginning of the 16th century the parish rights were transferred to the Laurentiuskirche in Enkheim. Services took place alternately in Enkheim and in the Kirchberg church. After the Reformation , the people of Enkheim accepted the Reformed Confession in accordance with their Hanau rulers.

In place of the dilapidated previous building, the new Laurentiuskirche was built between 1717 and 1719 as a baroque hall church . In 1805 the congregation acquired the decommissioned organ of the Leonhardskirche in Frankfurt and installed it on the newly built organ gallery. Due to a lack of money, the interior work was neglected for a long time and was not completed until 1878 when the walls and the woodwork were painted. Two bells were purchased in 1889. In 1911, the Enkheim and Berger parishes separated, creating two parishes that were merged again in 1971.

In March 1945 the church was severely damaged by the war and was restored in the period after the Second World War. In 1975 the church was fundamentally redesigned and equipped with a neo-baroque Bosch organ . The name of the church after St. Laurentius from the time it was built was replaced by Enkheimer Kirche in the 20th century , before the original name has been used again for some time.

The Evangelical Church Community of Bergen-Enkheim is the only Evangelical community in Frankfurt that does not belong to the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau , but to the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck .

The Laurentiuskirche is located northwest of the Enkheim town center, elevated on a plateau at the end of Laurentiusstrasse. The brightly plastered building ends in the east with a three-sided choir and is covered with a slate roof. The two long sides are divided by five high windows. The building corners and window reveals are made of red sandstone. The octagonal, stepped roof turret is to the west. There is also the entrance opposite the cemetery. The building is around 26 meters long and 14 meters wide, making it one of the larger Baroque hall churches in the Frankfurt area.

A redesign in 1975 by the architect Rudolf Temporini changed the building fundamentally. A window opening was made in the choir wall. The pulpit and the sound cover were placed 75 cm lower. A new sacrament table and a new baptismal font were made . The benches were replaced by chairs and the west gallery was enlarged for the organ and the choir. A roof porch at the entrance and the addition of a sacristy on the north side were further construction measures of this time.
