The Lauterburg district of Essingen in the Ostalbkreis was an independent municipality until 1971. The place is named after Lauterburg Castle .

Lauterburg is at 669 meters above Remstal on the Albuch , a north-eastern part of the Schwäbischen Alb . The marked area is 1107 ha. Roads lead from Lauterburg north to the Heubach district of Lautern , north-east to Essingen and south to Bartholomä . history
Until the 18th century
Lauterburg was originally only the Burgweiler assigned to Lauterburg Castle . After Lauterburg in 1128 an Adalbert from the house of the Swabian Count Palatine called himself. From the 14th century on, the barons of Woellwarth determined the history of the place. On May 6, 1732, Lauterburg Castle fell into ruins in a fire.
19th and 20th centuries
In 1806 the place came to the Kingdom of Württemberg and belonged to the Oberamt Gmünd until 1811 . In 1811 the place came to the Oberamt Aalen and belonged to the municipality of Essingen. In 1820 Lauterburg became an independent municipality of the Aalen District Office. The Oberamt Aalen opened in the Aalen district in 1938 . On December 1, 1971, Lauterburg again became a district of Essingen, which in 1973 became part of the Ostalb district as part of the district reform .
