The Lavangen ( North Sami : Loabákvuotna ) is a 17 km long fjord in the Norwegian Fylke (province) Troms og Finnmark . Almost its entire extent lies in the Lavangen commune named after him ; only a small section in the northeast belongs administratively to the neighboring municipality of Salangen .

The continuously about 2 km wide Lavangen extends from Astafjord , opposite the island Andørja , southeast and ends at the settlement Tennevoll , the administrative center of the municipality of Lavangen where the river Spandselva into the fjord ends and where in the valley of the river from the south and The provincial road Fv 84 approaching the European route 6 reaches the east bank of the fjord, but then turns north east of the mighty Skavneskollen.

The fjord cuts deep into the landscape between high mountains: on the north bank rises the massif of the 1252 m high Elveskardtindan and the immediately adjacent 1196 m high Skavneskollen, in the southwest of the 1266 m high Lavangstinden.

Settlements and Transport

On the north bank there are some dwellings on the first three kilometers east of the fjord mouth in Lavangnes, which belongs to the municipality of Salangen and can only be reached from there via a local road. The steeply towering coast below the Elveskardtindan and the Skavneskollen, adjoining it to the east, is uninhabited. Only the last 7 km at the inner end of the fjord as far as Tennesvoll are settled again and made accessible by a local road and the Fv 84.

Along the entire south bank from Tennevoll to the Astafjord there are houses and farms that are connected by the Fv 141 with one another, with Tennevoll and with the neighboring municipality of Gratangen .
