Lawrence Leathers
Lawrence Lo Leathers (born November 23, 1981 in Lansing , Michigan - † June 2, 2019 in Mott Haven, Bronx , New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( drums ).
Live and act
Leathers began to play drums as a toddler. He gained his first musical experience in the field of gospel music in his parish; there Joe Lane was his first mentor and teacher. He started working as a professional musician at the age of 15, then moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School . There he met Aaron Diehl and bassist Paul Sikivie , with whom he was to work together in a trio from now on. Through the Juilliard School he got into the environment of Wynton Marsalis , with whom he also performed in 2011, with the Aaron Diehl Trio as a rhythm section .
Leathers worked in the American jazz scene from the early 2000s; his mentor was EJ Strickland . He has since played with Diego Rivera, Ian Hendrickson-Smith . Between 2010 and 2018 he accompanied the singer Cécile McLorin Salvant in the trio of Aaron Diehl on worldwide tours and their Grammy Award-winning albums For One to Love (2016) and Dreams and Daggers (Motéma, 2017). He also played in the JC Stylles Organ Quartet, Neal Caine and Stephen Riley , with whom he also appeared in Smalls . In the field of jazz, he was involved in eleven recording sessions between 2003 and 2017, including a. also with George DeLancey , JC Stylles and Melissa Gardiner.
Lawrence Leathers was killed in the hallway of his Bronx apartment house on June 2, 2019. This was preceded by an argument with his girlfriend, in which a third person put him in a stranglehold, from which he died.
