JC Stylles (actually Jason Campbell , born October 7th around 1970 in Kuranda ) is an Australian jazz musician ( guitar , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Stylles started playing the guitar at the age of seven; he came into contact with jazz through his stepfather's record collection. He grew up in the rainforest of Kuranda, North Queensland ; at the age of 16 he began performing as a jazz musician, based on the style of George Benson . In the following years he took lessons from guest musicians such as John Scofield , Steve Erquiaga , Miroslav Vitous , Woody Shaw and Johnny Griffin . After moving to New York in 1992, he continued to study with Pat Martino , Tal Farlow , Rodney Jones , John Abercrombie and Barry Harris ; he also appeared in clubs such as Visiones . In the mid-1990s, he returned to Australia, only to live in New York again from 2005.

There Stylles recorded his first two albums Chillin 'at Home and Live and Unveiled , both in guitar / organ trio format. Since then he has worked with jazz organists such as Jimmy McGriff , Dr Lonnie Smith , Tony Monaco , Joey DeFrancesco , Pat Bianchi , Seleno Clarke , Jimmy "Preacher" Robbins, Melvin Davis, Nathan Lucas and Akiko Tsuruga. Most recently he presented the album Exhilaration and Other States at Motéma Music , on which Pat Bianchi (organ) and Lawrence Leathers (drums) had contributed. He has also performed in New York venues such as the Apollo Theater , Smalls , Smoke , Lenox Lounge , The Bar next Door, The American Legion Post, Minton's Playhouse , Fat Cat and Zinc Bar . JC Stylles is currently (2019) leading a quintet that includes Steve Nelson (vibraphone), Jon Davis (piano), George DeLancey (bass) and Byron Landham (drums).

Rick Anderson, who gave his Exhilaration album four (out of 5) stars in Allmusic , said Stylles was helping to "maintain a venerable jazz tradition that seemed to be dwindling for a while: the organ trio." a good ballad player, but he clearly lives for up-tempo numbers. "
