In 1985 he obtained his master’s degree and received his doctorate in cognitive psychology in 1987 . After receiving his doctorate, he taught psychology at colleges in Sarasota , Florida ( New College of Florida , 1987–1989), Lake Forest , Illinois (1989–1992) and in Chestnut Hill near Philadelphia (1993–1996).

Schoen is a globally recognized Klingonist, so an expert on the constructed language Klingon , resulting from the Star Trek - the universe has evolved, and one of the few people who speak fluent Klingon. Since 1991 he has been director of the Klingon Language Institute, which he founded . In this capacity, he attended meetings, held language courses, edited the translations of several works by Shakespeare ( Hamlet and What You Want ), the Epic of Gilgamesh and Laozi's Daodejing , and organized an annual conference of Klingon speakers.

Schoen's first science fiction story Past Waves appeared in Strange Plasma magazine in 1990 . By 2018 he had published around 50 short stories, including The Moment , which was nominated for the Hugo Award in 2010 . Four other stories by Schoen were nominated for the Nebula Award . In 2015 Schoen started a new cycle with Barsk: The Elephants' Graveyard . Barsk takes place in a distant future when humanity has disappeared and various races that have evolved from highly bred, intelligent animals have succeeded them and spread across the galaxy. One of these breeds is the Fant, an anthropomorphic elephant breed that was relegated to the ghetto planet Barsk a long time ago. There they developed a number of coveted drugs, including Koph, with which it is possible to communicate with the recently deceased and learn their secrets. At the center of the story is Fant Jorl, who can talk to the dead and learns an explosive secret from his deceased best friend. The novel was nominated for the Nebula Award in 2016 and won the Cóyotl Award , a prize for furry literature. In 2018, The Moons of Barsk was the second volume in the series.

From 2002 to 2018, Schoen was Head of Research and Analytics at Wedge Medical Center in Philadelphia. Since 2013 he has offered treatment of creative disorders in authors (writer's block ) through hypnosis .

In 2006 Schoen founded the small publisher Paper Golem , which is dedicated to the task of publishing new and promising authors in the SF genre on the one hand and providing a platform for the otherwise neglected short novel (20,000–40,000 words) on the other. In Paper Golem the anthology series published Alembicl and Cucurbital . Schoen's weekly blog Eating Authors has been running since 2011 , in which he asks authors about their work, their (eating) habits and their most memorable meal while eating (“tell me about your most memorable meal”).

Schoen has been working on a voluntary basis for the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) since 2008 , until 2016 as the Elections Officer responsible for elections, and since then as Director at Large .
