Lawrence Okolie

Lawrence Okolie (* 16th December 1992 in London ) is a British professional boxer in the cruiserweight division . As an amateur, he boxed in the heavyweight division.

Amateur career

Lawrence Okolie only started boxing at the age of 17 and became English University Champion in 2014 and 2015. Internationally, he first appeared in November 2015 when he won a bronze medal at the Tammer tournament in Finland after leaving the semi-finals without a fight . In 2016 he came to two appearances in the World Series of Boxing , where he was able to defeat the multiple US champion Cam Awesome and the Mexican Jared Barraza.

In April 2016 he won then surprisingly the European Olympic qualifying tournament in Samsun after pleading against Cristian Constantinov from Moldova (TKO) Roy Korving from the Netherlands (2: 1), Seyda Keser from Turkey (3: 0) Abdulqədir Abdullayev from Azerbaijan (3: 0) and Paul Omba-Biongolo from France (WO) prevailed and qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games with just 23 fights . There he succeeded in the preliminary round against Igor Jakubowski (3-0), but he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Erislandy Savón (0-3).

Professional career

He made his professional debut on March 25, 2017. In February 2018 he won the WBA continental cruiserweight title against Isaac Chamberlain and in June 2018 also secured the Commonwealth title against Luke Watkins. In September 2018 he defeated Matty Askin in the battle for the British championship.

On October 26, 2019, he won the EBU European Championship by beating Yves Ngabu early .
