Leïla Slimani
Leïla Slimani (born October 3, 1981 in Rabat , Morocco ) is a French-Moroccan writer and journalist. In 2016 she was awarded the Prix Goncourt for her novel Chanson douce .
life and work
Slimani is the middle three daughters of the economist Othman Slimani . She attended school in Rabat. In 1999 she went to Paris and studied media and politics at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and at ESCP Europe . After completing her studies, she attended the Cours Florent and briefly tried herself as an actress. She has worked as a journalist for Jeune Afrique magazine since 2008 , for which she reported on North African topics. In 2014 she published Dans le jardin de l'ogre, her first novel, which was awarded the Prix de La Mamounia in Morocco . The psychological thriller Chanson douce followed two years later . With a circulation of more than 76,000 copies, it developed into a bestseller within two and a half months even before it was awarded the Prix Goncourt. A total of 600,000 copies were sold within a year of publication.
In 2017 in German-speaking countries, in addition to the German translation of Chanson douce (as Then you sleep too at Luchterhand), her short story Sleeping Beauty appeared in the anthology L'amour toujours - toujours l'amour? Young French love stories.
In 2018, Slimani was appointed by Emmanuel Macron to the International Organization of Frankofonie , an organization of 84 French-speaking countries that promotes the French language.
