The first name (original title: Le Prénom) is a French feature film from 2012 . It is a cinema adaptation of the play of the same name by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte from 2010. The cast and direction of the film are identical to the original cast of the play. The premiere in Germany was on August 2, 2012. The film was shot in Paris .

Real estate agent Vincent is invited to dinner by his sister Elisabeth (called Babou) and her husband Pierre. She is a teacher, he is a professor of literature; their children are called Apollon and Mélodie (in the French original Apollin and Myrtille). Also invited is Claude, trombonist with the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and Babou's best friend since childhood. The evening is sociable until Vincent claims that the child he and his wife are expecting should be named Adolphe after the romantic hero of the novel by Benjamin Constant . The name met with rejection in the group, which sees only the connection to Adolf Hitler , and there was a heated argument.

The disputes are subsiding; But when Anna arrives, the dispute flares up again due to a misunderstanding: Since the child, contrary to Vincent's claim, is actually named after the father of Vincent and Babou and Claude's foster father and should be called Henri, Anna defends the chosen name and cannot understand the group's reactions. Finally, she counters that she cannot take someone who calls his children Apollon and Mélodie seriously. Although Vincent finally reveals his statement as a joke, the situation escalates. Pierre accuses his brother-in-law Vincent, whom he has also known since childhood, of being an egomaniac . He explains that, among other things, that he drowned a dog himself as a child and Vincent took the blame just to be the center of attention. Vincent then accuses Pierre of being a curmudgeon, which he denies.

Claude, who was already familiar with Vincent's name joke, holds back in this discussion. However, he also wants to know what nickname he got from the group. The answer is “plum” (“ Reine-Claude ”) and is an allusion to the fact that those present accuse him of being homosexual because they have no knowledge of whether Claude has relationships with women. Claude is beside himself and speechless. With his eyes he looks for Anna, who asks him to speak out the inevitable. The group then thinks Claude and Anna are having an affair, which turns out to be a fallacy. Instead, Claude has had a love affair with Françoise, the mother of Vincent and Babou, for five years. Vincent throws himself on Claude, under whose weight the coffee table collapses; Claude injured himself in the fall.

Babou feels betrayed because she always told Claude everything - including her problems with her husband Pierre. He is not aware of the problems and is confronted with the everyday life of his wife, who, instead of taking care of her doctorate , devotes herself to bringing up the two children.

The film ends with a reconciled group and the birth of Anna and Vincent's daughter, whom they name Françoise after Vincent's mother.

For their supporting roles, Valérie Benguigui and Guillaume De Tonquedec each won the French César film award in 2013 .

Remake

In 2018 a German remake by Sönke Wortmann with Christoph Maria Herbst and Florian David Fitz was released .
