The Le Triomphant (S 616) is the lead ship of the French submarine class named after her, Triomphant with nuclear propulsion. When it was commissioned in 1997, it was still equipped with the then newly developed M 45 (MSBS) missiles , after the development of the more modern M 51 (MSBS) with a greater range and improved accuracy, the rapid conversion to the new type took place.

Incidents

At the beginning of February 2009, the Le Triomphant collided with the British submarine HMS Vanguard in the Atlantic ; both ships were slightly damaged, the Le Triomphant was able to return to Brest on February 4, the Vanguard to Faslane-on-Clyde . France announced the slight damage to the Triomphant on February 6, 2009. The damage to the Vanguard and its collision with the Le Triomphant only became public on February 16 after the return of the English submarine.
