Trinity as a person with three faces

The stained glass window Life of the Virgin in the Notre-Dame-en-Vaux church in Châlons-en-Champagne , a French city in the Grand Est region , was created in 1527. The Renaissance window has been classified as a monument historique since 1840 .

description

The stained glass window is attributed to Mathieu Bléville , who also created other windows of the Notre-Dame church , based on the faces . Window number 23 (according to the scheme of Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi ) was created in 1527. The year 1527 can be seen on a red background on the merchant's table in the scene of Mary's temple passage and in the tracery (bottom left). The window was restored in 1906 by Jean-Baptiste Anglade .

In contrast to other windows of the church, where a large scene is shown in the middle, 12 scenes of the same size from the life of Mary are shown here in the form of miniatures . These are in chronological order from top left (starting with Anna and Joachim giving alms) to right and from top to bottom:

1st row

  • Anna and Joachim , Mary's parents, give alms
  • the high priest rejects Joachim's sacrifice
  • Annunciation to Joachim
  • Annunciation to Anna

2nd row

3rd row

In the tracery, the Trinity is depicted as a person with three faces, surrounded by angels making music. The four coats of arms in the lower area have not yet been identified.
