The stained glass window Battle of Clavijo in the Notre-Dame-en-Vaux church in Châlons-en-Champagne , a French city in the Grand Est region , was created around 1525. The Renaissance window has been classified as a monument historique since 1840 .

history

The window was donated by the cloth maker Jean Lallemont and his wife Anne Chenu from Châlons-en-Champagne. Until the restoration of the window in 1901, the date of the foundation could still be seen in the window. The window was made after an engraving by Martin Schongauer .

description

Window No. 27 (based on the scheme of Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi ) of the church depicts the alleged battle of Clavijo . Below left is the kneeling donor and below right the kneeling donor with John the Baptist with a lamb. In between, James the Elder is depicted as a pilgrim , whose veneration is connected with the Reconquista of Spain and the later pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . At the lower edge the donors of the window are named in an inscription. According to legend, James is said to have achieved victory at the Battle of Clavijo through his appearance .

In the central picture, James is shown on a white horse in battle, putting the enemies to flight. The luxurious clothing of the people and the armor correspond to the 16th century. To the left of James is Charlemagne , who according to legend is attributed to the liberation of the grave of James, with a white beard and a flag with a double-headed eagle . In tracery James lives of the Transfiguration of Our Lord at.

The leaded glass window is signed by the glass painter, which is very unusual for the time. Beneath James, on the red border of the saddlecloth of the rider who is stabbed with a lance, the name Mathieu Bléville is attached.
