The Greenland Porst ( Rhododendron groenlandicum ) is a species of the genus Rhododendron within the heather family (Ericaceae). It is widespread in North America and Greenland and is a neophyte in small areas in Central Europe .

Vegetative characteristics

The Greenland porst is an evergreen shrub that reaches heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. It has leg shoots and underground runners . The leaves are twice to five times as long as they are wide, ovate to lanceolate and rolled up at the edge. The middle rib on the underside of the leaf is covered by the rust-red, felty hair.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to July. There are five to eight stamens.

As a rule, the capsule fruit is twice as long as it is wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

Occurrence

The Greenland Porst is common in temperate to arctic North America and in Greenland . It thrives in raised bogs . In Germany, the Greenland Porst is naturalized in the Venner Moor in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Taxonomy

The first publication took place in 1771 under the name ( Basionym ) Ledum groenlandicum by Georg Christian Oeder . The new combination to Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) Kron & Judd was published in 1990 by Kathleen Anne Kron and Walter Stephen Judd . Further synonyms for Rhododendron groenlandicum (Oeder) Kron & Judd are: Ledum latifolium Jacq. , Ledum palustre subsp. groenlandicum (Oeder) Hulten .

use

The Greenland Porst is rarely used as an ornamental plant for bog beds. It has been in culture since the 20th century at the latest . The sap of the plant also helps against mosquitoes , which are widespread in Greenland , by grating the leaves and then smearing the sap on uncovered areas of the body.
