George Harry Stine (* 26. March 1928 ; † 2. November 1997 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American co-founder of rocketry scene, a science and technology writer and under the pseudonym Lee Correy a science fiction - writers .

biography

Education and early career

Stine grew up in Colorado Springs and attended the New Mexico Military Institute and Colorado College in Colorado Springs , majoring in physics. After graduating, he first worked as a civil scientist at the White Sands Missile Range and then from 1955 to 1957 as head of the Range Operations department at the US missile test facility.

Stine and his wife Barbara were friends of the author Robert A. Heinlein , who sponsored their wedding when Harry's parents were dead and Barbara's mother too sick to travel. Some of Heinlein's books are dedicated to one or both of them, particularly The Invasion of the Worm Faces . Stine wrote science fiction under the pen name Lee Correy and under his own name in the 1980s and 1990s and wrote scientific articles for Popular Mechanics in the mid-1950s .

Model rocket construction

After White Sands, Stine worked for several other aerospace companies and eventually worked for Martin on the Titan project . That job was short-lived: he was abruptly fired in 1957 when United Press called him about a reaction to the launch of Sputnik 1 , and he repeated to them a passage from his recently published book Earth Satellites and the Race for Space Superiority , in which he wrote:

“For the first time since the dawn of history, the Earth is going to have more than one moon. This is due to happen within the next few months — or it may have already happened even at the time you are reading this ”

“For the first time in history, the earth will have more than one moon. This should happen in the next few months. or it has already happened by the time you read this. "

- G. Harry Stine : Sputnik: The Launch of the Space Race

The next day he should clear his desk.

During his time at White Sands, he had handled requests from young people about missiles and had written an article on missile safety for Mechanics Illustrated in early 1957 . Shortly thereafter, he received a letter from Orville Carlisle who had begun building small models and, more importantly, replaceable solid fuel engines to power them. Stine was impressed with the samples Carlisle had sent him and wrote a cover article about them for the October Mechanics Illustrated issue. After Martin launched a rocket, he contacted Carlisle and the two founded Model Missiles Inc., the first manufacturer of model rockets and their engines. Stine also founded the National Association of Rocketry (originally called the Model Missile Association) and wrote the security code that became its centerpiece; He served as President for the National Association of Rocketry until the late 1960s.

Model Missiles Inc. was short-lived because they were unprepared for the level of business they wanted and because of bad business decisions. Problems with the production of early engines led them to bring in Vernon Estes, who joined them in the summer of 1958. The design and construction of "Mabel", the first machine to produce motors, was the basis of their success and enabled Estes Industries to play a dominant role in the hobby model rocket building industry that they still play today.

Stine continued to work to popularize the hobby, writing the Handbook of Model Rocketry in 1965 , which was published in seven editions over the years. He returned to the aerospace industry and continued to write under his pseudonym, including a Star Trek novel entitled Hoard of Life and the novel Shuttle Down . Under his own name, he was a regular science fact columnist for Astounding and its eventual successor Analog , where his articles influenced two generations of budding scientists, socialists and film artists. Along with Lindy Davis, Charles Friedlander, and Richard C. Hoagland , he was a consultant for CBS television news during the Apollo broadcasts. Stine also occasionally advised Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda on their work as technical artists for Starship Enterprise - The Next Century and collaborated on Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual . The character named "Harry Stein" in the novel Stardance by Spider and Jeanne Robinson pays homage to Stine.

In addition to his literary works, Stine wrote a large number of essays.

Other activities

Stine was very interested in the interaction of volunteer / free trade ideas with space colonization and as an instrument of citizen diplomacy and world peace and was therefore appointed chairman of the advisory board of the Libertarian International Organization, where he oversaw various citizen initiatives until his death. After his book The Third Industrial Revolution was published, he was asked to help organize the 1977 American Astronautical Society conference on private space colonization to shift the focus away from space exploration and where he received an award as the founder of the international space program.

He was interested in the concept of non-direct profit-oriented free markets and was the developer and defender of the "Pay it Forward" approach together with Robert A. Heinlein, a term that was also used in the film Pay it Forward , with Kevin Spacey and other stars , became popular. In addition to The Third Industrial Revolution , he wrote several other books to raise public awareness of the possibilities of a lucrative and socially beneficial active space industry.

Stine was a founding member of the Citizens' Advisory Council on National Space Policy and has attended several meetings, including the 1980 meeting that prepared space defense policy papers for the Reagan Transition Team. The council was instrumental in developing the Reagan Strategic Defense Initiative, which became known as Star Wars.

Additional speculative work later in his life included warbots , a fictional concept based on a fused human / robot force that used a blended combination of AI-powered robotic military units with on-site human commanders and drafted personnel to manage the situation to judge.

He died probably of a stroke on November 2, 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona.
