Leibniz Universität IT Services (LUIS), formerly the Regional Computing Center for Lower Saxony (RRZN) , is the central computing center of Leibniz Universität Hannover on Schlosswender Strasse in Hannover . It operates the university's data network and offers various services, including the meta search engine MetaGer (in cooperation with Suma e.V. ). The data center is one of the two locations of the high-performance computer HLRN -III. In addition, resources are available for the D-Grid initiative and internal university projects at LUIS.

At LUIS, which is housed in the historic industrial complex of the former JC König & Ebhardt book factory on Königsworther Platz , around 60 employees work in the areas of operations, research and teaching. Employees of the computer center offer courses on the topics of distributed computing and security .

history

In 1969 the RRZN was founded as a dependent institution of the state of Lower Saxony at the University of Hanover. In 1972 the data center could be started with its own mainframe computers . In the mid-1980s there were a total of three CDC computers (CYBER 76, 172 and 825). These computers were also available to other universities and research institutions in Lower Saxony as well as to institutes at the universities of Hamburg and Kiel . In the first ten years of data center operation, 10 million program runs were carried out with a value of 500 million DM (this would correspond to around 490 million euros today ).

High performance computing

Various computing and data resources are available at the RRZN for use in regional and national projects.

HLRN

HLRN-III
supercomputer at the Hanover location

Together with the Konrad Zuse Center for Information Technology Berlin , LUIS has been operating the HLRN-III , a geographically distributed high-performance computer, since the beginning of 2014 . In the final expansion of the HLRN-II introduced in 2008, around 25,000 computing cores with 92 TB of RAM and a total computing power of 312 TFlop / s were available at both locations. In this expansion stage, the HLRN-II was included in the list of the 500 fastest computers in places 108 and 109 (status: November 2011). The computing power is used for research, especially at the North German universities and their excellence initiatives .

Compute cluster

Smaller computing clusters operated by LUIS are available to users at the University of Hanover; they include 28 nodes with 64 cores and around 700 GB of RAM.

Grid computing

As the core location of the D-Grid initiative, LUIS is involved in various projects and operates a cluster used exclusively for grid computing . This includes 60 computing nodes with a total of 480 cores and 960 GB of RAM. Two SAN systems with 115 Tbytes of total storage can be used to store input and output data.
LUIS is the central operator of nationwide accounting in D-Grid based on the Distributed Grid Accounting System of the Italian INFN .

services

The LUIS offers various services for students and employees of the University of Hanover, including:

  • Network access via wireless LAN on the university campus and at other institutions participating in the Eduroam program
  • Computer workstations
  • Printing of posters and plots
  • Provision of software (including within the MSDNAA )
  • Development and hosting of institute websites with the CMS Typo3
  • as well as the RRZN manuals (see below)

The meta search engine MetaGer is available to the general public on the Internet.

Research and Teaching

The LUIS offers various courses on parallel computing and IT security. The institute affiliated with LUIS conducts research in various third-party funded projects; the executive director of LUIS is also director of L3S .

RRZN manuals

In a work-sharing cooperation with over 180 universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the LUIS offers manuals on various computer-related topics. The subject catalog ranges from the basics of PC technology to programming languages; The target group of the popular manuals are students.

The first manual published by the RRZN was entitled FORTRAN 77 language range and the first edition appeared in July 1982 (zero number July 1981). It dealt with Fortran 77 and was available in variants for operating systems from CDC (NOS, NOS / BE, SCOPE 2) as well as DEC , Fujitsu , IBM and Siemens . By March 1985 (7th edition) this publication had reached a total circulation of 30,000 copies. In the meantime, over 200 different titles with a total circulation of over 3 million copies have been published.

Some manuals are published in collaboration with Herdt-Verlag . All books can only be obtained by members of a cooperating university.

The cooperation was initiated by the RRZN employee at the time, Dipl.-Math. Wilhelm Noack initiated and coordinated for 30 years until March 2012.

renaming

The RRZN has been renamed several times by the Presidium of Leibniz Universität Hannover and now (as of June 29, 2013) officially has the name Leibniz Universität IT Services (LUIS).

Name change history:

  • 2010: Central Services Information Technology (ZSIT) "In order to emphasize the service aspect, to create a clear reference to Leibniz University Hannover and to emphasize the central function alongside other decentralized IT offers, the RRZN is renamed to" Central Services Information Technology (ZSIT) ""
  • 2011: Renaming to Central Services Information Technology (ZIT)
  • 2011: Renaming to Z.IT
  • 2011 Renaming to Central Services Information Technology: "The Presidium decides that the Central Facility, formerly the data center, RRZN for short, should currently and exclusively use the long version of“ Central Services Information Technology ”in communication (including print). The short version is still in the Exam."
  • 2011: Internet survey on renaming as part of the development of a brand concept, carried out by the Institute for Marketing & Management at Leibniz University Hannover
  • 2012: Renaming to Leibniz University IT Services (LUIS)
