Klaus Leidorf (born June 5, 1956 in Bonn ) is a German aerial photograph archaeologist .

Life

From 1976 to 1983 he studied Protestant theology, religious history and prehistory and early history in Bonn and Marburg . From 1983 to 1985 he was a research assistant at the University of Marburg and from 1985 to 1989 a research assistant at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . As an aerial photograph archaeologist, he was able to ideally combine his interest in photography, which he already had at a young age, and his fascination with flying. In 1988 he acquired his flight license at the expense of the Society for Archeology in Bavaria and was trained by the aerial archaeological pioneer Otto Braasch in Landshut . In addition to aerial archaeological activities for the preservation of archaeological monuments in Hesse, Thuringia, Saxony and Lower Saxony, he also held teaching positions at the Universities of Marburg, Würzburg and the Ruhr University in Bochum .

In addition to courses on aerial archeology at the University of Würzburg in the 1997/98 winter semester and at the Philipps University in Marburg in the 1994/95 winter semester, he also led training projects in 1996 for Eastern European students in Hungary and in 2005 and 2007 for European students in Italy.

From 1983 to 1995 he played a key role in the development of the academic publishing house Marie Leidorf for publications in the field of archeology and is the founder and co-editor of the International Archeology series. Since 1989 he has been a freelance aerial photograph archaeologist with a focus on Bavaria.

In addition to the discovery of countless archaeological monuments, he is increasingly interested in documentation of aerial photographs. Since the fall of the Wall, he has exemplarily recorded the "Green Belt" on around 1400 km of the former inner-German border in the years 1996, 2003 and 2008 in countless recordings. A special “Green Belt Germany” stamp worth 155 cents was issued on March 2, 2020. The by Prof. Annette Le Fort u. The stamp designed by Prof. André Heers shows an aerial photo of Klaus Leidorf.

In addition to documentary recordings, countless artistic recordings were made from a perspective that most people do not see. From the air one has different views and insights, which give a new dimension to the well-known and the everyday through a clever choice of the image detail. They show structures of impressive and unusual aesthetics in the man-made landscape that cannot be seen from the ground. His photos are published in calendars and books.
