Leïla Martial
Leïla Martial (* 1984 in the Ariège department ) is a French jazz singer .
Live and act
Martial is the daughter of an opera singer and a classical oboist. At the age of five she played the piano; at ten she was accepted into the Collège de jazz de Marciac . At the age of 17 she began her singing studies at the Conservatory of Music in Toulouse, which she graduated three years later. She began to occupy herself with jazz improvisation; she counts gypsy jazz as well as chansons , jazz vocalists like Betty Carter and contemporary composers like Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt among her influences. In 2007 she founded a quartet with Eric Perez (drums), Jean-Christophe Jacques (saxophone) and Laurent Chavoit (bass). She also worked with Celine Bonacina , in 2009 with Tony Tixier ( Parallel Worlds ), in 2012 with Yann Pittard on the score for De l'usage du sextoy en temps de crise . In 2012 she released her debut album Dance Floor ; In 2013 she made a guest appearance at Jazz in Marciac . Vincent Peirani invited her to the SWR Jazz Meeting 2013 to make music with his quintet Living Being . Her album Baabel was released in 2016 on the Laborie label with the trio Baa Box . In the Trio Baa Box (which she forms with the guitarist Pierre Tereygeol and the percussionist Eric Perez) she was one of the sensations at the 2018 festivals; In 2019 the album Warm Canto was released , which deals with the chants of the Inuit . She can also be heard on Anne Paceo's album Circle .
Martial is currently not only in the Trio Baa Box , but also in the Duo Fil with the cellist Valentin Ceccaldi . Her singing style is less based on classical jazz singing, but understands her voice as an instrument.

In 2009 Martial won first place as a soloist at the Concours de la Défense and third place with her quartet as a group. She came first in the 2013 Crest Jazz Vocal competition .
