history

LLI was founded in 1867 as a production company for sugar from beet in Leipnik in Moravia (in what is now the Czech Republic ). The founders of the Leipniker Rübenzuckerfabrik AG were Alfred Skene and the factory's first president, August von Skene and Alexander von Schoeller , who took over the financial management. Founding shareholder Robert Schorisch became technical director. The financing was handled by the Schoeller bank. In 1871, a plot of land was found in Lundenburg, an important railway junction, for the construction of another production facility.

The upswing succeeded under Sir Paul Eduard von Schoeller and after its initial listing on the Vienna Stock Exchange in 1893, the company established itself as one of the leading companies in the sugar industry in the Austrian monarchy of that time.

In 1902 the sugar factory in Leopoldsdorf went into operation. On the initiative of Paul Eduard von Schoeller's successor and board member of the company, Robert Schoeller , and his brother-in-law and president, Richard von Skene , the sugar factories in Lundenburg, Wschetul and Kwassitz, which were combined to form Lundenburger Zuckerraffinerien AG, were added to the Leipniker Rübenzuckerfabrik AG in 1911. Kwassitz was closed and processing moved to Wschetul. In 1926 the merger with Dürnkruter Zuckerfabrik AG took place, from which shares were acquired from 1914. In 1939 Leipnik-Lundenburger sold the stake it had only acquired in 1936 in the Tulln sugar factory , which was jointly founded by the Austrian sugar factories.

After the Second World War, the company began to diversify. At the same time as gradually reducing its involvement in the sugar industry, LLI expanded its holdings in the Austrian milling industry and the Delikomat company in the vending machine business . In 1978 the first Wiener Walzmühle Vonwiller, Schoeller KG in Schwechat was bought, whose long-time partner Philipp von Schoeller then became president of Leipnik-Lundenburger from 1981 to 1988.

In 1977/78 the operations in Hohenau, Leopoldsdorf and Dürnkrut were incorporated into the newly founded SUGANA Zucker Ges.mbH. At the end of 1979, the ownership structure of LLI changed, whose largest block of shares was owned by Schoeller & Co. The general partnership was converted into a stock corporation in view of the increasingly difficult banking business. The Schoeller Holding AG was connected upstream, in this the cooperative central bank, today's Raiffeisen Zentralbank (RZB) participated. LLI's share ownership moved to Schoeller Holding AG.

Due to problems with the trading company Gebrüder Schoeller, the Schoeller family, who until then held the majority in the holding company, had to sell the majority of the shares. After the closure of the sugar factory in Bruck an der Leitha and an increasingly difficult sugar market, the shareholders of SUGANA Zucker Ges.mbH decided to quickly merge with the Tullner sugar factory, which belongs to Raiffeisen. After the closure of further sugar factories in Siegendorf and Enns, sugar production in Austria concentrated on the Hohenau, Leopoldsdorf and Tulln locations. In November 1989 the merger took effect and Agrana Beteiligungs AG was founded.

The shares of LLI were taken off the stock exchange in the 2001/02 financial year. With the market opening of the former communist neighboring countries, the LLI began its expansion abroad.

The 11.34% stake in Casinos Austria AG was sold to Novomatic on July 26, 2015 .

Josef Pröll was appointed to the company's board of directors in July 2011 and takes on the role of general director. Kurt J. Miesenböck has been on the LLI Board of Directors since 2007, Michael Kafesie since 2015.
