Helmut R. Leppien once wrote about Leiv W. Donnan:

“The working method becomes clear; the discovery of extreme motifs of movement in pictures, the intention of which is not art, and their transformation into signs ... The shreds of images from reality fixed by Donnan awaken a process in the viewer that goes beyond reception and analysis. "

- Helmut R. Leppien in: Der neue Egoist , Volume 1, Hanover 1975

In 1979 Donnan had an apartment and studio at Liebigstrasse 13 in the Hanover district of List .

On the occasion of his own 80th birthday, Donnan gave the Sprengel Museum Hannover 68 of his own prints and 41 graphics by other artists. As a result, the museum showed a special exhibition with Donnan etchings. Donnan, who often printed several plates on top of each other and thus blurred the boundaries between figurative and abstraction, explained during the vernissage in an artist talk with the curator Karin Orchard:

“Nowadays, more and more pictures come to us. I want to slow down this process and make sure that the viewer turns to the pictures. "

- Leiv W. Donnan during his vernissage at the Sprengel Museum Hannover in July 2018
