The Lemberg is a mountain in the North Palatinate Bergland on the south bank of the Nahe between the places Niederhausen (Nahe) , Oberhausen an der Nahe and Feilbingert , on whose district it lies. At 421.3  m above sea level NHN , it is the highest point on the middle and lower reaches of the Nahe.

Linguists interpret the name Lemberg also as Lindberg and local poets call him the king of the Nahegau . The igneous rock porphyrite to be found there is evidence of its volcanic origin.

Mining

There were several mines on Lemberg , which mainly served to mine mercury . One of three known mercury trains of the Dreizüge mine , the Schmittenzug , has been exposed since 1976 and is now the Schmitten tunnel , which is accessible as a visitor mine . The other two moves were the St. Martin's Train and the Loyalty Confidence . The Geißkammer or Ernesti-Glück mine was near Feil .

Mercury degradation can be detected as early as the middle of the 15th century. The scarlet mercury sulfide ( cinnabarite , vermilion ) of Lemberg was used by painters of that time. The coal extraction of the mine In der Eisenhecke west of Feil am Lemberg, however, was secondary. The numerous and extensive quarries on the southern slope led to the emergence of the Lembergsee, locally also known as Silver Lake.

In April 1801, the spoils from a night attack by Schinderhannes , which had been committed in Laufersweiler , were divided up in the mine tunnel .

landscape

So far, several pre-Christian altars have been discovered on the ridge of the mountain, evidence of a 2000-year-old Celtic - Roman cult site. The Romans later built a shrine to Mercury here . In addition, the abandoned mine tunnels in Lemberg are the last refuge for a number of rare bat species . The mountain is the namesake of the Lviv nature reserve .
