Lemon Tree is an Israeli feature film from 2008. The film opened in German cinemas on October 2, 2008.
action
Salma Zidane is a widow. She lives on the edge of the West Bank and tends her late father's lemon grove. The Israeli Defense Minister Israel Navon and his wife Mira are moving into a new house across from the lemon grove. The Palestinian woman Salma and her lemon grove are now assessed as a threat to the minister's security. A fence is drawn, an observation tower is erected and the Israeli military decides to expropriate the lemon grove in exchange for compensation. Salma seeks help in the Palestinian community, but to no avail. Only the lawyer Ziad Daud takes on the case. A socially forbidden but cautious love affair ensues between Salma and the much younger Ziad. They go to court together, but are rejected. However, Salma does not give up and goes to the Israeli Supreme Court. The widow's month-long struggle becomes an international political issue. The international and Israeli press report extensively on the process. Salma is even supported by Mira. The two women cannot get closer, but Mira feels sympathy for the combative woman on the other side of the fence.
The judge before the Supreme Court finally seeks a compromise. Salma can keep the lemon grove. Only about 100 trees, i.e. H. half of the trees need to be cut to a low height. In the meantime the fence has become a huge wall. The defense minister loses his wife over this conflict. He is alone in his new house, surrounded by a wall. Behind the wall, Salma mourns the no longer usable lemon grove. She learns from the newspaper that Ziad has become engaged to a young woman.
Reviews
Rolf von der Reith wrote in TV Digital 20 on September 19, 2008 that the drama was meant to be highly symbolic, but excellent actors, especially Abbass, would turn the political lesson into a gripping cinema drama. At the 2008 European Film Awards , Riklis Film also received nominations in the categories of Best Actress (Abbass) and Best Screenplay .
