Lenny Popkin

Leonard "Lenny" Popkin (born May 30, 1941 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ).

Popkin, whose interest in jazz was sparked by recordings by Louis Armstrong and Earl Bostic , attended the Lenox Summer School in 1959 . From the early 1960s he was a student of Warne Marsh , then Lee Konitz and especially Lennie Tristano . In 1981 he made his debut album, Falling Free . Then he worked in a trio with pianist Liz Gorrill and Eddie Gomez , with whom he released the album True Fun . Since 1988 he has led a quartet with Connie Crothers , which brought out several albums by the mid-1990s. He has lived in Paris with his wife, the drummer Carol Tristano, since 2005 and continues the tradition of the Tristano School with his trio, which consists of his wife and the bassist Gilles Naturel . Popkin has also played with Philippe Soirat , Jean-Philippe Viret , Alain Jean-Marie and Dominique Cravic and can also be heard on albums by Gilles Naturel and his Contrapuntic Jazz Band Act . Stéphan Oliva / François Raulin and Anthony Braxton have also interpreted his compositions .
