Jean-Philippe Viret
Jean-Philippe Viret (* 1959 in Saint-Quentin ) is a French jazz musician ( double bass , composition).
Live and act
Growing up in Caen, Viret took piano lessons but lost interest in music until he met Emmanuel Bex , who got Viret to turn to bass. He began studying the double bass at the Bordeaux Conservatory when he was eighteen . After a short time he worked professionally in a trio with Bex and drummer Renaud Penant in jazz clubs. In the autumn of 1979 he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Versailles Conservatory. In 1981 he founded the Orchester de Contrebasses , a septet or sextet of double bassists (partly with Renaud Garcia-Fons and Hélène Labarrière ) with Christian Gentet, Yves Torchinsky and Dominique Lemerle, which released seven albums between 1982 and 2012. Here he also began to compose. Since 1989 he has accompanied Stéphane Grappelli in a trio with guitarist Marc Fosset for eight years . He has also appeared with Simon Goubert , Daniel Humair , Lee Konitz , Jean-Marie Machado , Richard Galliano and Bill Carrothers . He also played with Dominique Cravic in Les primitifs du futur .
Since the late 1980s he has led a piano-jazz trio with the pianist Édouard Ferlet and the drummer Antoine Banville or (since 2008) Fabrice Moreau , which has released five albums. Since 2012 he has also been active with his string quartet Supplément d'âme , which is looking for new approaches to baroque music. In 2017, with Les idées heureuses, the second CD of Supplément d'âme was released , which was expressly highlighted by the critics.
