The township was founded on November 8, 1853; the administration was established on April 4, 1854.

The Lenox Township is immediately south of the area of the city of Monmouth , where the administrative seat of Warren County is located.
The township is 23 miles east of the Mississippi River , which forms the border between Illinois and Iowa .
