Leo Jaritz (born September 3, 1908 in Vienna , † August 11, 1989 there ) was an Austrian trumpeter , jazz musician , composer and conductor .

Life

During his training at the Vienna Music Academy , which he graduated from in 1932, Leo Jaritz toured Austria with an orchestra. In 1934 he founded a dance orchestra and from then on worked closely with the radio. In the big jazz competition, the competition for the 'Golden Band' in the Vienna Konzerthaus , Leo Jaritz was awarded the Golden Band three times in a row for the best jazz band in a large line-up in 1935, 1936 and 1937.

The typical Leo Jaritz style of performing almost symphonic forms of music in large ensembles in the unadulterated idiom of swing was rather unusual for that time. For example, works by Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt were quickly rearranged and became the most popular jazz performances of the time. Leo Jaritz is described as a pioneer of jazz music in Austria in 1947 in the book 'Triumph des Jazz' by the author Jack Back.

The musical role model and personal friend of Leo Jaritz was the British jazz pianist and band leader Jack Hylton .

The jazz band Leo Jaritz, which made its debut at the Vienna Opera Ball in the 1938 ball season , was to remain a permanent institution of this event for decades afterwards.

In 1966 he was awarded the Golden Merit of the Republic of Austria , in 1973 the Golden Merit of the State of Vienna and in 1974 the title of professor.
