Leo White (clergyman)

Leo Joseph White OFMCap (born March 20, 1929 in Chatham, Malta , † July 31, 2018 in London ) was a Maltese religious priest and Apostolic Prefect of Garissa in eastern Kenya .

Life

Leo White entered the religious order of the Capuchin one, studied in England and in Rome and received on 29 July 1956, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Initially, Leo White worked as a teacher and went to Colombia in 1963 for five years . From 1968 to 1973 he was a military chaplain in the Royal Navy and then went to Kenya as a missionary.

On December 9, 1976, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Apostolic Prefect of the Garissa prefecture, established on the same date . With the elevation of the prefecture to the diocese, he resigned from his office in early 1984. He moved to the United States , where he was active in the pastoral care of several parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn .

In 1990 he left the order and was incardinated in the diocese of Brooklyn . He returned to England, where he worked at St. George's Cathedral in London from 1995 to 2000 and was involved in pastoral care for Latin American immigrants. In 2000 he retired and stayed in England, where he also died. His grave is in the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery in Paola , Malta.
