The Diocese of Garissa ( Latin : Dioecesis Garissaensis ) is a bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church located in Kenya . The seat of the diocese is Garissa . The area of the diocese includes the districts of Garissa , Mandera and Wajir , which were previously combined in the province of Northeast Kenya , as well as part of the Tana River district .
history
As early as the 16th century, Portuguese Augustinians established a mission station in Faza on Pate , an island in the Lamu archipelago on the north coast of Kenya. The Consolata missionaries got involved from 1968 on from their mission station in Meru in what is now the diocesan area and established bases in Wajir and Mandera . From 1973, the Capuchins of the Maltese Order Province settled .
Today's diocese Garissa was founded on December 9, 1976 by Pope Paul VI. Formed as an Apostolic Prefecture from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Meru and the then diocese of Mombasa . The prefecture comprised the province of Northeast Kenya , which previously belonged to the diocese of Meru, and the districts of Tana River and Lamu of the coastal province , which had previously belonged to the diocese of Mombasa. On February 3, 1984 Pope John Paul II elevated the Apostolic Prefecture to a diocese. On June 2, 2000, the Diocese of Garissa gave the district of Lamu and part of the Tana River district; together with the previously belonging to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa District Malindi which was from Roman Catholic Diocese of Malindi founded.
The diocese of Garissa is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mombasa.
