The Roman Catholic Diocese of Meru ( lat. : Dioecesis Meruensis ) is in Kenya located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Meru . It includes the Meru County .
history
Pope Pius XI founded the Apostolic Prefecture Meru with the Breve Tanquam sublimi on March 10, 1926 from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Nyeri . With the Apostolic Constitution Progreditur continenter it was raised to a diocese on May 7, 1953 and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Nairobi as a suffragan diocese.
On May 21, 1990, it became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Nyeri.
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- February 20, 1956 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Kitui ;
- December 9, 1976 to the Garissa Apostolic Prefecture ;
- June 9, 1986 to the Diocese of Embu ;
- December 15, 1995 to the Vicariate Apostolic Isiolo .
