Life

Leon Kossoff was the son of a Russian - Jewish emigrant family . In 1938 he attended Hackney Downs School in London and during World War II Kossoff did his military service in France , Belgium , the Netherlands and Germany . Between 1949 and 1953 he studied at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design , as well as at the London South Bank University under David Bomberg . He then completed a three-year course at the Royal College of Art . In addition to his artistic work, Kossoff also held teaching positions, from 1959 to 1964 at Regent Street Polytechnic and the Chelsea School of Art and from 1966 to 1969 at St. Martin's School of Art . In 1972 the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London devoted an extensive solo exhibition to him. Kossoff exhibited his early drawings in 1981 at Riverside Studios in London, and his paintings from the 1970s at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford . The painter Kossoff, who was also well versed in a wide variety of graphic techniques, mainly used figurative objects, often placed in mythological contexts, which he reproduced in an expressive graphic or painterly manner .

Together with his artist colleagues of about the same age Francis Bacon , Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach , he is usually counted in the so-called School of London - one of the artists who did not devote themselves to abstract painting after the war, but returned to figuration and thus a long-standing typical Characteristic of English painting.

In 2014 he was elected honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . Leon Kossoff died in July 2019 at the age of 92 after a brief illness.
