Leonhard Wismair , also Wiesmair, Wyssenmayer, Wyssmayer, (* around 1400 in the Archdiocese of Salzburg; † May 20, 1458 probably in Tyrol) was Bishop of Chur .

Life

Leonhard Wismair was after his studies for doctor decretorum PhD (Jura). From 1442 he worked as a pastor in Kolsass in Tyrol; from 1446 to 1452 in the village of Tirol near Merano . He was also Salzmaier in Hall in Tirol and Chancellor of Archduke Sigmund from 1452 to 1455 . He was canon of the cathedral in Chur and the cathedral in Brixen .

In 1450 he was elected Bishop of Brixen; but he renounced because Pope Nicholas V did not recognize him. He was the victim of an affront by the Pope with the cathedral chapter of Brixen. The Canons of Brixen had decided "in obedience to Duke Sigmund" not to elect Nikolaus von Kues , the curia diplomat proposed by the Pope , but the Archducal Chancellor Leonard Wiesmair as bishop. He also found support from the Drei Bünde , a free state in what is now the canton of Graubünden , and the Archduchy of Austria . But his election was not recognized by Pope Nicholas V.

1454 he was by Emperor Friedrich III. appointed imperial council; In 1455 he gave him "the regalia and fiefs of his bishopric" . Friedrich III. "orders the mayor, mayors, ammen and councilors of the city of Zurich as well as of Schwyz, Glarus and Uri, Leonhard, the elected bishop of Chur, whom he has enfeoffed with the regalia , to protect and shield against the archdeacon of Trento , Antonius Thosabetis and to give no assistance to the latter, "in the same way we do to know our holy father, the babst, through our message. At midday after Bertlmees day " .

After the Pope's death in 1455, Antonius de Tosabeciis was replaced by the new Pope Kalixt III. , Member of the powerful Borgia family, appointed Bishop of Chur in 1456. Tosabeciis died surprisingly on October 1st, 1456. Leonhard Wismair, elected Bishop of Chur in 1453, remained in office as Elekt until his death.

Wismaier's work “in imperial services and also at the councils of Constance (1414–1418) and Basel (1431–1449)” is highlighted as “outstanding”.
