Leonid Mychailowytsch Tschernowezkyj (born November 25, 1951 in Kharkiv ) is a Ukrainian entrepreneur, philanthropist and politician . Between 2006 and 2012 he was mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

Chernovetskyi served in the Red Army from 1970 to 1972 . In 1977 he graduated from the Kharkiv Law Institute with a law degree. From 1977 to 1981 he was a senior investigative prosecutor of Kiev Oblast , from 1981 to 1984 he was again at the Kharkiv Legal Institute and received the degree of Candidate of Law ( Dr. jur. ). From 1984 to 1989 he was a lecturer and deputy vice -rector for scientific work at the Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev . In the early 1990s he founded Praweks, including PraweksBank, one of the largest banks in Ukraine. After moving into politics, he became a member of the Our Ukraine party and from 2002 to 2006 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada , the Ukrainian parliament. For some time he was a freelance advisor to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko .

He is the founder of the Christian Liberal Party of Ukraine. In the 2004 presidential election in Ukraine , he ran as a candidate for president in the first round, but only achieved 0.46 percentage points.

On April 20, 2006, he won the mayoral elections of Kiev with a share of 32% of the vote against Vitali Klitschko , who was able to unite 24 percent of the votes. In the 2008 election he won again in front of Oleksandr Turchynow . He held the office of Mayor of Kiev, succeeding Oleksandr Omelchenko , until June 3, 2012.

According to Forbes.ua, he is the 11th richest person in Ukraine in 2015 with a fortune of $ 643 million. Since retiring as mayor, he has returned to work as an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Personal

Chernovetskyj was married twice. With his first wife he has the son Stepan Tschernowezkyj (* 1978) and a daughter (* 1979). In 2012 he married a second time and in 2014 he became a father again and a grandfather for the first time. He is a devout Christian and associated with the Kiev Embassy of God (main pastor Sunday Adelaja ).
