Leopold Dubois (born May 10, 1876 in Vienna ; † December 15, 1948 there ) was an Austrian ballet dancer and choreographer .

Life

Leopold Dubois the Elder J. was the son of the Belgian dancer and dance master Leopold Dubois the Elder. Ä. (Born November 4, 1850 in Harmanschlag ; † February 13, 1926 in Vienna), who had worked as a solo dancer at the Vienna Court Opera for 35 years and, after his retirement in 1918, ran a dance school at Langen Gasse 67, Vienna-Josefstadt .

Leopold the Elder J. was trained as a child in the ballet school of the Vienna Court Opera , began his engagement on February 1, 1893, made his debut in 1902 as a soloist and became a partner of Irene Sironi (1872–1961), who was engaged as prima ballerina from 1892 to 1905. In the years up to 1920 there was hardly a ballet premiere in which he did not dance a leading part. He also represented the art of dance at the Vienna Opera on numerous guest performances abroad, from which he said goodbye in July 1931 (contract expired on September 1).

Dubois also gained importance through his teaching activities. His dance school taught whole generations of young Viennese ballroom dancing and directed the arrangement at prestigious balls - such as the first (1924) and the following Philharmonic balls . Leo Dubois also worked as a teacher at the Opera Ballet School and as a professor at the Vienna Academy for Music and Performing Arts .

Dubois was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (12B-16-12). He is the father of the castle actress Lona (Leonie) Dubois (1923–1978) and the grandfather of the actors Christopher Heinz and Florian Dubois.
